The coconut drum is a great instrument for beginners as it can be played in a very simple way with the beater. The techniques that apply to this instrument can be learned as the player becomes more comfortable.
For beginners to play the coconut drum, you will need to hold the coconut drum in your non-dominant hand, then with the beater, strike the top of it to produce a sound. To go to the next level, you will want to create your own rhythms and develop timing. Once you're comfortable with that, you can try advanced techniques like palm muting and part muting. This involves covering the sound hole partly or fully in between strikes to adjust the tone while playing. This adds variety to the sound and makes it more interesting to listen to.
